I am talking about how Jesus transforms life. There are only spiritual solutions for the problems we face in the USA. It really is darkness versus light. We face the same problems faced in Bible days. We are all spiritually dead until we allow Jesus to transform us. Being born again is the rebirth of the human spirit from spiritual death to spiritual life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Amplified Bible) Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life]. Let’s back up just a moment for context of how this New Birth affects us. Here is a quick primer on how God made you, spirit, soul, and body. Without this baseline understanding of how your spiritual life thrives, Satan and his forces can easily trip you up and spoil your spiritual life. This is simplistic, but accurate. If you know the alphabet and phonetics. You can learn to read. If you understand simple math, you can learn to navigate in the financial world. If you understand the basics of your physical life – proper eating, proper rest, proper exercise, and proper hygiene – then you can live a relatively healthy life. What I share today can help us navigate in a healthy way spiritually in a dark, twisted, sinful, God-dishonoring culture. This has guided my life for the last 49 years. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NLT) Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. I am a spirit being, I have a soul, and I live in a physical body. God is a spirit. Man is a spirit. Spirit The part of your person that relates to God; your conscience, intuition, the inner knowing that you have; a gut sense; all of this comes from the spirit of man and is deeper than thought. Job 32:8 (NKJV) But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding. Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV) The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart. 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NKJV) Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 1 Peter 3:4 (NKJV) Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. Soul The part of your person that relates to the world around you. The predominant voice of your soul is reason. The soul is made up of three parts – intellect, emotion, will. The combination of the spirit of man in a human body created the soul… Genesis 2:7 (NLT) Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person. Our soul and spirit are very closely connected – only the Word of God can divide them. We must learn to differentiate between spirit and soul. Hebrews 4:12 (PHILLIPS) For the Word that God speaks is alive and active; it cuts more keenly than any two-edged sword: it strikes through to the place where soul and spirit meet, to the innermost intimacies of a man’s being: it exposes the very thoughts and motives of a man’s heart. Hebrews 4:12 (TPT) For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy, and it pierces more sharply than a two-edged sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bone and marrow meet! It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and secret motives of our hearts. The soul must be saved or renewed! James 1:21 (NKJV) Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Body The “earth suit” that you live in. The primary voice of the body is feelings. It is the seat of the 5 senses. 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NLT) For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2 Corinthians 5:2-8 (NLT) We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. (3) For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. When Adam was first created, his spirit flowed in harmony with God. His soul was in unison with his spirit, and was the servant of his spirit life. His body was in harmony with the earth from which it came. His entire being flowed in complete agreement and harmony, each part complementing the other. When Adam, the first man, sinned or disobeyed God, his spirit was separated from God. His soul took the place of authority over his spirit. His soul and body fell into rebellion against God and His will. He was thrown into confusion. The New Birth removes the desire to do wrong deep inside you – in your spirit. The New Birth is the beginning of a process of total transformation from the inside out! Romans 6:6-14 (NLT) We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. 8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. 9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. 10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. 12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. 14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace. The nature of sin that was removed from you when you were born again left a residue in your mind, in your emotions, and in your body. It left a residue and trained you to act certain ways, and to respond and talk certain ways. The nature of sin left habits in your physical body that must be forsaken, and your body must be retrained to say NO! Listen to what James says about the challenge to live free from sin as a believer! James 1:13-15 (NKJV) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Drawn away addresses habits that are created through years of living. His own desires deals with mental, emotional, and physical residue that come from years of yielding to the influences of the unredeemed nature of sin before you came to Jesus. Enticed refers to the drawing power of habit that we must resist! 3 ways to resist the temptation you programmed into your mind, emotions, will, and body: 1. Develop a strong devotional life – every single day. 2. Watch what kind of people you choose as close friends. 3. Draw the line of demarcation between you and the things that tempt you. The most important thing that we can do after the new birth is to dedicate our bodies to the Lord and renew our minds! Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Kenneth Wuest [rational, in that this service is performed by the exercise of the mind]. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1 (PHILLIPS) With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to him and acceptable by him. Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity. Romans 12:1-2 (NLT) And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Action Points: 1. What steps have you taken to make changes in your thinking and physical habits since you have been born again? 2. Can you easily distinguish the difference between your spirit, your soul, and your body? 3. What steps are you taking to guard against the temptations of your past life? 4. Are your close friends helping or harming your relationship with Jesus? 5. What things do you need to stay away from so that you don’t fall into past sinful ways of living?
